One of the standouts of our two-screen festival in 2021, underwater haunted house flick THE DEEP HOUSE is now available to watch on Netflix!
Dim the lights, crank up the sound and dive into the horror…
Here’s what we said back in 2021 –
“Take a deep breath, folks. The snappy, mischievous pun of the title might prove all-too-cruelly deceptive. French New Extremist masters Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (INSIDE, LEATHERFACE) are back, pulling no punches and cranking up the claustrophobia to suffocating levels with this high octane, high concept fusion of haunted house horror and sub-aquatic shocker. Slyly satirising the self-important but insecure microcelebrities of Youtube, with their desperate desire for clicks and likes, it takes a couple of online urban explorers, and places them way out of their depth – quite literally – as their desire for more followers and influence leads them into insane danger. The directors have talked at length in interviews about the technical difficulties of the underwater shoot, the pressures on the actors and crew in terms of pure physical risk, and this is reflected in the palpable tension throughout the film, as though everyone involved in the production is channelling their very real fears and anxieties into the onscreen action. Featuring impressively physical performances from Camille Rowe and James (son of Mick) Jagger, and spectacular underwater photography from Jacques Ballard, this is a smart reinvention of several classic genre tropes all at once, and is guaranteed to leave you quite literally gasping for air.”
