Grimmfest Says: On the surface, this is a sour, sweaty, stripped down, old school cat and mouse road movie, taking its cues from such desert neo-noir classics as BREAKDOWN or RED ROCK WEST, and the take-no-prisoners novels of Jim Thompson. But the narrative here draws equal inspiration – as well as newfound relevance and resonance – from such shocking real-life cases as that of Sarah Everard in the UK, and George Floyd in the USA, which demonstrated just how far a police badge actually can enable a psychopath to hide in plain sight, doing whatever he pleases, acting out his worst fantasies and impulses, giving full rein to his misogyny and racism. Beautifully shot, with a real feel for its seedy, run-down, middle of nowhere locations, the film ratchets up the tension and antagonism between the two lead characters with expert skill, as intimidation, sexualised threat, and attempts at extortion gradually give way to something far more extreme. Britni Camacho makes for a sympathetic, resourceful, and resilient protagonist, while John Schwab’s law-unto-himself redneck County Sheriff, Bilstein, makes THE KILLER INSIDE ME’s Lou Ford look like Dixon of Dock Green. The result is a tense, gritty, gruelling and socially engaged thriller, that is not afraid to confront its horrors head on.
