Ahead of the release of the 5th and ‘final’ installment THE RED DOOR, tiptoe through the tulips with meeee as we stroll down memory lane and revisit some of the best scares this series has given us.
As always, just The Reaper’s opinion!
BABY MONITOR
Ahh, baby monitors. Meant to be a way for parents to hear if their baby needs something, but used by horror films for a very different purpose. Renai is trying to compose in the first INSIDIOUS when she hears… something… on the baby monitor. What sounds like a hushed conversation suddenly erupts into a voice screaming “I WANT IT NOW!” as Renai drops the monitor and our heart drops in our stomach.
TIN CAN PHONES
Dalton is trying to sleep in CHAPTER 2 when he hears the tinny voice of his brother Foster through their joined tin can phones. It doesn’t take him long to realise Foster is sound asleep, and the string on the tin can is leading to a nearby closet.. He follows it as the string goes taut, and wets his PJs as a young girl comes out of the cupboard at full sprint.
TIPTOE THROUGH THE TULIPS
Back to the original. Nice new house. Left that nasty baby monitor stuff and other events behind. Just unpacking, sun is shining. Wait, was that a little boy? And what is this highly disturbing song? Renai is mortified to find it indeed wasn’t the house that was haunted, as she follows a fast little boy into Dalton’s room, where he’s hiding…
WHO’S THAT NEXT TO YOU?
Poor Quinn. Hit by a car and left paralysed in bed in CHAPTER 3, she’s alone chatting to a friend via video call when the friend asks who’s next to her and then suddenly freezes. Quinn sees the Man Who Can’t Breathe behind her curtain, before he creeps up and flings her from the bed like a ragdoll.
SUITCASE SCARE
Elise is halfway down a tunnel to hell under her childhood home in THE LAST KEY after discovering a terrible family secret, trawling through suitcases filled with skeletal remains. She’s terrified, constantly checking behind her. We know the scare is coming, but it’s teased so many times that when Key Face does appear it bloody gets us.
I know I know, I wanted to avoid the obvious Darth-Maul-behind-Patrick-Wilson scare – though that is fantastic.
Just wanted to mix it up!
INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR is in cinemas from Friday 7th July.
