Director Michael Steiner will present and answer questions.
Grimmfest Says: A smart, stylish Swiss neo-noir chase movie, about two mismatched but equally desperate women on the run from a brutal drug gang and their corrupt cop associates, this plays like a far more cynical and downbeat DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, stripped of the “Yuppie Nightmare” / Self-actualisation / wish fulfilment elements, and recast into a very different context.
Here both women are outsiders from the wrong side of the tracks – a Serbian-born single mother and petty thief, and a Turkish-Albanian call girl – and, while both are hardened survivors, they are in an alien city in a foreign land, and the film amps up the tension accordingly. Gorgeous to look at, with stunning night time cinematography, fluid camerawork, razor sharp editing, and loads of visual snap and panache, it grounds its noir-toned stylisations with some sharp social observation, pungently witty dialogue, and deftly drawn, morally ambiguous but sympathetic and likeable lead characters. And it moves like an express train, delivering the goods, both as a thriller, and as a gripping tale of female friendship and self-determination.
