The legends attached to the rectory at Borley, and famed paranormal investigator Harry Price’s subsequent investigations of them, caught the public imagination during the late 1920s, and would later provide inspiration for such books as Shirley Jackson’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and Richard Matheson’s THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE. This film examines the legends, the controversial investigations and uncovers a ghost story which reveals more about what might have been missing from Borley than what might have been possessing it.

Grimmfest is proud to be presenting the world premiere of this remarkable and utterly unique film. Over six years in the making, it’s a real labour of love for its creator, Ashley Thorpe; combining traditional filmmaking technique with an elaborate mix of rotoscoping, digital animation and compositing, using a mixture of live action, stills, paintings, and model work, to offer an immersive, atmospheric, and elegantly retro-styled exploration of the Most Haunted House in Britain. Featuring a score by sometime Banshee Steve Severin, and with a cast including the League of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith, Julian Sands and Nicolas Vince, it’s an extraordinary cinematic experience. We’ve never seen anything quite like it. The closest comparisons we could make would be to the H.P. Lovecraft Society’s film version of THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS (screened at Grimmfest #3), or some of the work of Guy Maddin, but the effect here is very different. A chance to follow in the footsteps of Harry Price, and enter Borley Rectory for yourselves… Long after it has been demolished. Who knows what might be waiting for you there?
