This July we are very excited to return to the astoundingly beautiful Stockport Plaza Cinema for the first of many new special events. We are proud to announce the first of these events, supported by the lovely chaps at Horror Channel, is an all-day marathon dedicated to the Mexican master of the macabre GUILLERMO DEL TORO. Known for his impeccable film making in dark fantasy, gothic horror and crafting cult blockbusters, we invite you to join us for 4 of his best films on the huge screen at Stockport Plaza on July 2nd 2017.

About the venue:
Stockport Plaza is an astonishing 1314 capacity art deco cinema and theatre dating back to 1932, it is one of the last remaining ‘super cinemas’ remaining in the country and is a sight to behold. The cinema underwent a significant restoration at the turn of the millennium and is now back to its former glory with its huge screen, 35mm and more film projectors, beautiful auditorium surroundings and an original Compton Theatre Organ!

GUILLERMO DEL TORO ALL-DAYER LINE UP
CRONOS – 12.30pm
In 1536, in Veracruz, Mexico, during the Inquisition, an alchemist builds a mysterious and sophisticated device named Cronos to provide eternal life to the owner. In the present day, an antiques dealer named Jesus Gris finds Cronos hidden inside an ancient statue whilst cleaning it with his granddaughter Aurora. He accidentally triggers the device and soon his wife Mercedes and he note that he has a younger appearance. Out of the blue, the stranger Angel de la Guardia visits Gris’s shop and buys the old statue. The next day, Gris finds his shop trashed and Angel’s card on the floor. He pays a visit to Angel who introduces him to the eccentric millionaire De la Guardia who then explains the healing power and the eternal life given by Cronos. Angel is sent by De la Guardia to hunt down Gris to get Cronos no matter the costs.
PAN’S LABYRINTH – 2.40pm
In 1944, in the post-Civil War in Spain, rebels still fight in the mountains against the falangist troops. The young and imaginative Ofelia travels with her pregnant and sick mother Carmen Vidal to the country to meet and live with her stepfather, the sadistic and cruel Captain Vidal, in an old mill. During the night, Ofelia meets a fairy and together they go to a pit in the center of a maze where they meet a faun that tells that she is a princess from a kingdom in the underground. He also tells that her father is waiting for her, but she needs to accomplish three gruesome, tough and dangerous assignments first. Meanwhile, she becomes friend of the servant Mercedes, who is the sister of one of the rebels and actually is giving support to the group. In a dark, harsh and violent world, Ofelia lives her magical world trying to survive her tasks and sees her father and king again.
THE DEVILS BACKBONE – 4.45pm
After losing his father, 10-year-old Carlos arrives at the Santa Lucia School, which shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians, and is taken in by the steely headmistress, Carmen, and the kindly professor, Casares. Soon after his arrival, Carlos has a run-in with the violent caretaker, Jacinto. Gradually, Carlos uncovers the secrets of the school, including the youthful ghost that wanders the grounds.
BLADE II – 7.00pm
In this amazing action packed sequel, we return to the world of Marvel Comics’ BLADE where a rare mutation has occurred within the vampire community. The Reaper. A vampire so consumed with an insatiable bloodlust that they prey on vampires as well as humans, transforming victims who are unlucky enough to survive into Reapers themselves. Now their quickly expanding population threatens the existence of vampires, and soon there won’t be enough humans in the world to satisfy their bloodlust. Blade, Whistler and an armoury expert named Scud are curiously summoned by the Shadow Council. The council reluctantly admits that they are in a dire situation and they require Blade’s assistance. Blade then tenuously enters into an alliance with The Bloodpack, an elite team of vampires trained in all modes of combat to defeat the Reaper threat. Blade’s team and the Bloodpack are the only line of defence which can prevent the Reaper population from wiping out the vampire and human populations.
