INTRO FULL LINE UP PROGRAMME GUESTS TICKETS
Highlights include:
Gala Opening Night
Featuring the North West Premiere of nerve-racking rural shocker THE HALLOW, with special guests director Corin Hardy (who secured directorial duties on the upcoming CROW reboot on the strength of this movie) and star Joseph Mawle (GAME OF THRONES, RIPPER STREET, SENSE8, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, THE AWAKENING); a special Northern Showcase at which SFX maestro Shaune Harrison will be presenting the world premiere of his directorial debut, THE BOX with the film’s star, Dominic Brunt. This will kick off a selection of the best, most bone-chilling, boundary-pushing films from the region. Rounding off the evening will be the regional premiere of the savagely funny splatter-satire, BLOOD SUCKING BASTARDS.
World Premiere
DXM, The latest offering from Andrew Goth (Gallowwalkers). A visually stunning conceptually-challenging tale of a sub-atomic struggle for the subconscious. Goth’s explosive, headspinning fusion of theology, quantum physics, psychedelia, and martial arts action was one of the must-see films at Cannes this year. The director and members of the cast will present the film.
European Premiere
The ultimate computer virus is about to update itself in ANTISOCIAL 2, a tale of social media gone rogue, sequel to one of the hits of Grimmfest 2013.
Punk legend Henry Rollins stars in bar-hopping biblical vampire vigilante epic HE NEVER DIED; there’s BLADERUNNER style cyberpunk noir in the reality-bending SYNCHRONICITY; feminist body-image horror in the queasily satiric EXCESS FLESH, which recently left audiences reeling at SXSW festival in Texas; amnesia, loss of self and love against the odds in viral possession movie THE HIVE; and three Teutonic tales of terror in the portmanteau GERMAN ANGST, featuring the latest harrowing short from the infamous Jorg Buttgereit, director of NEKROMANTIK.
New UK and IRISH movies
We’ll be joined by cast and crew from gripping werewolves on a train shocker HOWL and eerie rural witchcraft chiller CHERRY TREE, both receiving their North West Premieres. and both likely to provoke lively Q&A sessions.
As ever, Grimmfest offers a chance to catch the genre films taking the festival circuit by storm; a chance to be among the first to see the films that everybody is going to be talking about six months from now. This year, the mood is decidedly retro. There’s 80s-style post-apocalyptic action in the riotous MAD MAX / BMX BANDITS mash-up TURBO KID, old-school Lucio Fulci style ghosts and gore in WE ARE STILL HERE, and headbanging heavy metal hellishness in DEATHGASM.
Because the truth is often far scarier than fiction, we offer the regional premiere of THE NIGHTMARE, Rodney Ascher’s chilling follow-up to the acclaimed Stanley Kubrick documentary ROOM 237, an exploration of the terrifying phenomenon of sleep paralysis. Steven Paytner, one of the subjects of the film will be joining us to talk about some of his nightmarish experiences.
Holiday Horror
In honour of the season, we are proud to present the Northern Premieres of HELLIONS and A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY. The horrifying and hallucinagenic HELLIONS is Canadian cult director Bruce McDonald’s follow-up to the acclaimed PONTYPOOL and the all star talent anthology that is A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY which is destined to become a seasonal classic.
This year’s schedule is so stuffed with premieres that we only have space for a couple of genre classics, Grimmfest favourite HELLRAISER celebrates a new, remastered release from Arrow and in tribute to the passing of horror Meastro Wes Craven we present a charity screening of SCREAM.
Short Sharp Shocks
As ever, our horror shorts programme has something for everyone, from Johnny Vegas to Stephen King…
Bitlord Gaming Area and Festival Hub
We are delighted to welcome Manchester-based gaming events company BITLORD, who will be hosting a selection of games from the eighties through till the present day, including a VR set up, multiplayer and brand new games from local developers. Bitlord will be operating out of our new Festival Hub, which will also feature stalls, signings, and other exciting genre-themed events and and activities.
